A Study on the Morphological Flower Bud Differentiation of the Leading Fifteen Chestnut Cultivars in the Middle Part of Korea

Abstract
A study of the morphological flower bud differentiation of the leading fifteen chestnut cultivars (Castanea, Mill) in the middle part of Korea was conducted from July 9 to September30, 1977.
The followings are some significant findings of this study:
1. The earlier flower bud differentiated cultivars from the 50% frequency level were Moriwase and Yamatowase falling on July 9, and the latest fall on July 23 were Sandae and Rihey. The others belonged to intermediate cultivars as differentiated on July 16, 1977.
2. The earlier one-thirds group of the fifteen chestnut cultivars in terms of the catkins growth in length were Yamatowase, Dahup, Dansawa, Moriwase and Kanne, and the latest group were Kinley, Kingyose, Rihey, Sangrim and Sandae. The remainders were the intermediate group showing least fluctuation in their average height growth.
3. The development stages of intermediate cultivars were classified into three stages; the mild July group, the dynamic August group and stunted September Group which all showes more than 5% significant differences, particularly the August group with more than triple growth between the first and last week.
4. And it was observed that the inflorescence primordia of catkin begin to appear on the second week of August.
5. Accordingly, it was found that the first week of June one month before the flower bud differentiation as well as the mid August the dynamic development stage could be considered as the most important periods for the chestnut growing.
